Should loyalty points expire? Expire the reward instead

Loyalty points shouldn't expire on a calendar, but a reward the customer has already earned should, because a short deadline is what gets it redeemed.

Loyalty reward ideas and what each one costs you

The best loyalty program reward ideas cost you far less than the customer thinks they got, which is why a free item beats the same money off the bill.

Do loyalty programs work? Yes, but not on your regulars

Controlled studies find loyalty programs do lift repeat business, but the lift comes from occasional customers speeding up near a reward, not from regulars.

What you'll find here

Most writing about customer loyalty is a sales pitch wearing a lab coat. The number gets quoted, the study behind it turns out to be a vendor's own survey, and the advice underneath it never survives contact with a real counter on a real Saturday.

We write the other kind. Every article here starts from published research or first-party data, cites what it leans on so you can check the work, and says plainly where the evidence runs out. When a finding is inconvenient for a company that sells loyalty software, we print it anyway.

The recurring subjects are retention economics, what actually makes someone return, how rewards change behaviour and when they fail to, and the practical mechanics of running a program in a shop that is already busy.
